If you are starting an affiliate business online, one of the main things you need to do is get traffic to your site.  Free traffic is one of the best ways to save money while getting still getting traffic.  First you need to submit your site to the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing, but also submit to the smaller search engines.  The more your website is spread around the Internet, the better your ranking will be and thus you will get more free traffic.

Join forums that are related to your website’s topic and post in those forums.  Make sure you add relevant content in your posts and don’t just hype your own site.  That won’t get you a good reputation in the forums.  Once you are known in the forums as someone who gives good content and feedback, you will have more people looking to you and your website for solid information and feedback.  Another good sign for your online marketing business. 

 The big 800 pound gorilla in getting free traffic is getting a page one ranking in Google with your website.  The closer you are to the top of the first page, the more free traffic you will receive.   The top site on page one usually gets 40% of the traffic and it drops down from there the lower you are.  If you are not listed in the first couple pages, you will not get much traffic so your goal should be trying to get to page one. 

So how do you get to that elusive first page of Google?  If you check most sites that are listed at the top of page one in Google, they will have several things in common.  First, they will usually have a high page rank and have been around for longer period of time.  You can still rank high in Google with a new website, but normally that will take time, especially when you are competing against websites with solid content, a high page rank and several years in age.   It all depends on how Google perceives the value of your site.

One of your first things you need to do to get that page one ranking in Google is to decide what keywords you want to be ranked for.  If your website is about cats then your main keyword of cats will be way too hard to get top ranking.  If you do a Google search of cats as a keyword, you will see you would be competing with over 100 million other pages for the word cat.  Your chances of top ranking are nil.

What you need to do is get a list of less competitive keywords and use these words in your content on your site.  The less competition for the keyword, the better chance of you getting a high rank for that keyword.    Keep adding these low competition keywords and you will slowly rise in the rankings and you will start getting the traffic you want for your internet online business.
